The fun of felt berets

I love to felt berets in different colours and sizes.

This is my latest addition to the range of felted berets I’ve made.

Wearing my turquoise felted beret

Here I used turquoise merino wool in 4 very fine layers for every side, felted around a template.

This very light beret weighs just 52 gramm. It is very comfortable to wear: soft, light and warm.

The beautiful big Shetland wool beret below, with 40cm diameter was one of two berets made for stilts walkers in England.

In the last few years I have felted different sized berets. Most of them I made as customised orders. Customers from different parts of the world e.g. New Zealand, the U.S., and Austria commissioned customised berets.

Giant Shetland wool beret

I have felted giant berets with 55 cm diameter. Quite a task to felt a size of beret like that! The template had 60 cm diameter and through the felt process the fibres matt  together, become a felted fabric while the hat shrinks.  The felt process is gentle at the beginning and can be quite vigorous and hard work towards the finishing part while a firm fabric is built.

I enjoy using a natural material like sheep’s wool fibres to create a hat that looks great and keeps the head warm. If you would love to commission a customised beret, then please contact me and I would be happy to create one for you. Or if you would like to get yourself starting on felting please check out my felt workshops and book your place.
